The Photography Committee promotes excellence in and an appreciation of good photography through study of photographic techniques. We host guest speakers, offer club photography workshops, and keep our members informed of GCA photography workshops and field trips. Exposure to the photography sector of the garden club allows one's love of gardening and the natural landscape to flourish through a different lens. Professional photographers mentor our members on the techniques for thoughtful composition and framing, with keen eye, creative inspiration, and purposeful documentation. We also learn how to use our iPhone cameras to the optimum. The Photography Committee also provides documentation of our meetings, events, flower shows, and fundraisers. At times we are asked to furnish our club and/or GCA with high quality photographs for publications and media uses. Those members that grow and sharpen their photography skills can submit their photographs in both the local and GCA flower shows. Their artwork will be exhibited and judged, allowing those that enter to further hone their skills and receive additional feedback. Our recent speakers have included member/photographer Tina Nieves, who led us through Lotusland offering composition, lighting, and aperture suggestions as we photographed this idyllic garden setting. On another outing, Sterling Keeley, a retired professor of botany from the University of Hawaii who has also worked in fire ecology of California chaparral, joined committee members for a walk through the Douglas Preserve. We received a botany lesson while trying to capture the essence of these native plants in photos. The committee also recently attended the Ellsworth Kelly photography exhibit at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. | Tina Nieves, photography workshop leader, at Lotusland February 2022 |
