The Garden Club of Santa Barbara

Floral Design

The Floral Design Committee provides educational opportunities for Garden Club members by hosting speakers, demonstrations, classes, and workshops. We have held classes on hand-tied bouquets, corsage bracelets, miniature floral displays, leaf manipulation, underwater arrangements, and wreath making. Jenn Sanchez of Jenn Sanchez Designs recently conducted a how-to floral demonstration at Rose Story Farm. In the fall, we gathered for a pumpkin-covered succulent workshop.

Before our 2023 "In the Garden of Splendor & Delight" flower show, the committee held several workshops to educate our membership on advanced floral design techniques. We explained and clarified the guidelines and requirements for successful GCA flower show entries, giving advice and support to entrants in the floral design division

Workshops are often run by our very own GCSB members. Members Cheryl Miller, Pat Tenney, and Lou Frost are GCA floral design judges, and they often generously share their insights, shortcuts, and expertise on floral design.   These hands-on classes encourage our members to further explore their talents in floral design..

Our Floral Design Committee is also responsible for the design and execution of floral arrangements for our fundraiser events and floral displays for our monthly general meetings, and we create holiday floral arrangements for Visiting Nurses Association (VNA) and Hospice, an annual December activity that all GCSB members look forward to.

Nationally and internationally acclaimed floral, landscape, and interior designers have been instrumental in participating in our fundraising efforts. Guest speakers have included Michael Merritt of Twigery, and James T. Farmer III, acclaimed southern landscape and interior designer and author of A Place to Call Home. We gathered tips on entertaining from Charlotte Moss, and vivid flower flash details were shared by Lewis Miller. These professionals help our club members and their guests define their own personal style and refine their creative design talents.

Thanksgiving Pumpkin Succulent Workshop

In the spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday, three of our Provisionals, Tina Nieves, Sara Pelton and Betsy Bingham (from left to right) gathered for an impromptu workshop instructed by Cheryl Miller and hosted by Kelly Lloyd. These beautiful succulent covered pumpkins adorned our buffet table for the November GCSB General Meeting.
