Designed by George Washington Smith, Casa del Herrero is one of the finest standing examples of Spanish Colonial Revival Architecture in America. It is included on the National Register of Historic Places and maintains National Historic Landmark status, partly due to its eclectic mix of Country Place Era and Moorish-inspired gardens. What was once the private estate of industrialist George Fox Steedman and his descendants, is now a historic house museum and garden, stewarded by a nonprofit organization dedicated to its preservation and availability to the visiting public. In 2021, GCSB granted Casa monies to remove and replace a dangerous dead cedar and to begin renovation of its rose cutting garden. This year our grant covered expenses for 42 rose bushes, soil prep, temporary rabbit-proof fencing, irrigation and labor to finish the rose garden renovation. Casa completed this project in March. The Arizona Garden at Casa del Herrero was restored by the Garden Club of Santa Barbara's Horticulture Committee. Annually, this committee along with the Provisional Class, works in the garden cleaning up dead plant materials, looks for propagation opportunities and replants these items. Basically the group spends the morning in fine detail mode to make the garden look pristine and beautiful. Additionally, this same group comes to the Casa in January to prune the roses. Often we are led by our fearless rosarian, Dan Bifano, to train and educate the team. | Photo credit: Matt Walla The ladies who lead the Arizona Garden restoration project.
